From majestic temples to azure seas lapping against dreamy beaches, Thailand ticks all the paradise boxes. Throw in the city buzz of Bangkok and some sizzling local dishes and the secret is out. If you step beyond the crowds and avoid the Full Moon Parties, however, tranquil Thailand can still be found.
Koh Lao Liang
While out-of-towners laze on the legendary Phi Phi Islands, Thai vacationers have their own southern secret. These two tiny islands, more than 12 miles off the Trang Province coast in southwestern Thailand, are teeming with vibrant sea creatures and silky white sands, and the only beds you’ll find here are eco-friendly beachfront tents.
Phetchaburi
The town of Phetchaburi is within easy reach of Bangkok and definitely deserves more than a fleeting glance on your southward journey. Thailand’s fascinating heritage can be seen in its traditional teak houses and Royal Palace, and many-a-shrine sits in the surrounding jungle.
Nan Province
For a rural Chiang Mai experience without the crowds, head toward the Thai-Laos border in northeastern Thailand, where remote rice paddies and unique ethnic groups breathe life into the unspoiled natural beauty of Nan Province.
Prasat Hin Phimai
Cycle through peaceful Phimai town and explore this exquisite Khmer temple, which once linked Thailand to the Khmer Empire capital at Angkor Wat. It was completed in the 11th century before work on Angkor had even begun.
