The number of passengers using Stewart International Airport as an alternative way to travel to and from New York has increased over the past year.
Some 178,301 people used the airport in January and February, up from 125,582 in the first two months of 2007.
The increase is thought to be due, in part, to new services from Skybus connecting Stewart to Columbus, Ohio, and Greensboro, North Carolina.
Dianne Ehler, Airport Manager at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, told the Poughkeepsie Journal, that she is expecting total passenger numbers to reach one million by the end of the year.
This growth could lead to flights to Europe, based on demand from passengers and interest from airlines, she explained.
AirTran Airways, JetBlue and Northwest Airlines offer services from Stewart to destinations across the U.S. Delta Air Lines and US Airways also provide connection services to its hubs from the New York airport.
