Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) on Florida’s Gulf Coast may be international, but it’s by no means large. International flights here are seasonal and limited to Canada and Mexico, making this primarily a regional airport. Still, it serves more than four million annual passengers and is equipped with some degree of comfort amenities for both business and leisure travelers. Here’s what you’ll find at SRQ, along with some expert tips for making the most of your next trip through the airport.
SRQ serves both Sarasota and Bradenton and you can easily take public county buses to either. These are inexpensive and abundant, but keep in mind that they’re not just for airport shuttle service, so they can be crowded and weren’t purposefully designed for toting large amounts of luggage. If you’re traveling light, feel free to catch them at Ground Transportation to the west end of the baggage claim area.
Unless you specifically need to go to a designated stop served by one of the county buses, I recommend the Breeze shuttle for anyone heading to Sarasota. This super convenient service directly links the airport to eight hotels in downtown Sarasota for almost the same price as a public bus ticket. It’s far more comfortable and is equipped with ample storage for any size and amount of luggage.
You don’t need to be staying at one of the hotel stops to use this service, and can easily transfer by taxi or rideshare to your exact destination from the closest hotel stop on the route. I highly recommend downloading the Breeze app for live updates on bus schedules and arrivals – plus, it’s required if you want to pay by credit card. Drivers accept cash, but exact fares only – no change.
Several hotels offer their own shuttle services from the airport, and you can check with yours if you’re interested in this most direct option. Many are free, so I definitely recommend inquiring.
Both Sarasota and Bradenton are great locations to have a car, with top beaches and attractions spread further than you’ll find in urban destinations. For ultimate convenience, this is one spot I often recommend renting over trying to take public transportation everywhere. Fortunately, there are plenty of car rental options at SRQ with nearly a dozen popular agencies on-site, from budget brands like Dollar to more premium options like Hertz.
All agencies have counters located directly in the baggage claim area and cars are kept in a covered lot (a must in the Sarasota sun) just outside the terminal (no shuttles needed).
If you’ll be staying in the downtown area with only occasional trips to the nearest beaches, rideshares can be a fairly affordable alternative. Both Uber and Lyft operate from SRQ and will travel between downtown and the most popular local beaches during your time here. The designated pickup area is in the same Ground Transportation center as the buses, outside the west end of baggage claim.
A few taxi companies also serve SRQ and can be found just outside the terminal when available. If you don’t see one and prefer taxis over rideshares, there’s usually an employee near the exit closest to Ground Transportation – this person will get a taxi for you. If you can’t find anyone, there’s a courtesy phone at this exit for additional assistance.
With currently just over a dozen gates, there’s only one security checkpoint at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, but you don’t need to worry about long lines. Throughout most of the day, you can expect to be through general security in under 10 minutes. During peak periods, it doesn’t hurt to plan for 20 minutes, but you’ll probably be through quicker.
If you have TSA PreCheck clearance, you can use the dedicated security lane here to be through in even less time. With PreCheck, I’ve never waited more than five minutes to get through security at SRQ, and rarely even that long. CLEAR has not yet made its way to SRQ for even further expediting, but it wouldn’t make a significant difference here anyway. There’s hardly any wait.
If you’re departing from SRQ and prefer to leave a car there, the good news is that daily rates in the long-term parking lots are well below national averages for larger cities. Just be sure not to accidentally leave your car overnight in short-term parking or you’ll pay a much higher penalty rate. There are free shuttles from long-term parking to the terminal starting two hours before the first flight of the day.
There are no lounges of any kind at SRQ, including airline, membership, VIP or USO. If you can’t stand hanging around the airport gates with nothing to do, this may be the time to cut it close and arrive as late as possible. Fortunately, short security lines and the small footprint of SRQ make this more possible than in many other locations.
If you have priority status with your airline and can use dedicated check-in lanes (or don’t have luggage to drop and will just use a mobile boarding pass), this later-arrival plan is particularly feasible for you – especially if you have TSA PreCheck. Otherwise, I caution against coming too much later than usual just to avoid boredom at the gate – better safe than sorry.
Because of its smaller size, this isn’t an airport that will land on any foodie destination maps. Still, there’s enough to keep you full before or between flights. Post-security, you’ll find both Starbucks and Dunkin’ for familiar coffee drinks and snacks, along with a café, a bar and Jimmy Johns for sandwiches and breakfast favorites.
Admittedly, the food options in these locations aren’t great and complaints are common, though the drinks go over much better. Because of this, SRQ is one of the rare airports where I recommend grabbing a bite before passing through security. Landside, Dewar’s Clubhouse serves a large selection of quality meals and you can still get a great drink here too (especially if you’re a Scotch lover).
If you need to bring home some souvenirs for friends and family, I urge you to do your shopping in the bountiful stores in downtown Sarasota or Bradenton. Once you reach the airport, shopping is severely limited.
The only shopping opportunity post-security is a newsstand shop common among airports, though it’s large and does offer some Florida-themed merch for the desperate souvenir shopper. If you come through this airport often, you can also take advantage of my favorite perk here, the Read & Return program, which lets you return books within six months for a 50% refund.
Interestingly, there’s actually more shopping before security than after. Landside, you’ll find an additional newsstand shop (this one also participates in Read & Return, as do several newsstand shops at nearly 100 North American airports). But you’ll also find the airport’s only specialty store, a PGA Tour Shop. In addition to golf clothes and accessories, you’ll also find some beachwear here, in case you forgot your swimsuit.
Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport offers free Wi-Fi across all areas of the airport. It’s unlimited, and you just need to provide your email address to connect. This does sign you up for the airport newsletter, but I just unsubscribe when the first issue comes. This does also mean I’m resubscribed every time I pass through and sign in again though. If you’re not up for regular unsubscribing, just use your mobile data instead.
While there aren’t a ton of human amenities throughout SRQ, pets are well served in this animal loving region, and that includes at the airport. Before security, there are dedicated animal relief areas outside each end of the terminal (near ticketing to the east and by the taxis on the west end) and they both contain a fire hydrant and waste disposal bags in case you’re all out.
Better still, there’s also an animal relief space after security, near Gate B2. If your furry friend needs to use the restroom again before boarding, you won’t have to exit and re-clear security at SRQ.
