No, that’s not tie-dye on these groovy trees.

It’s not paint, either. It’s all natural, baby.

These brightly colored trees are known as rainbow eucalyptus, or rainbow gum, and you can find them growing naturally in areas like New Guinea, New Britain and Sulawesi. A little closer to home, these vivid eucalyptus trees can be found on the Hawaiian islands of Maui and Kauai.

So why is the rainbow eucalyptus so colorful? The tree’s outer bark layers shed at different times, revealing a bright green bark underneath. As the green bark ages, it naturally changes into blue, purple, orange and maroon shades. The result is one of the brightest and most colorful trees you’ll find in nature.
