Nature is filled with beautiful surprises. Take, for example, the spectacular Northern Lights that mystically illuminate the night sky all across the Arctic. This light show creates strikingly ethereal streaks of greens, blues and reds across the sky, and now is the time to visit: The Northern Lights peak around the fall equinox (Sept. 22) and the weeks following the change of the seasons. Add to that the fact that 2012-2013 is the peak of the auroras’ 11-year cycle, and you have the perfect excuse to cross the Northern Lights off your travel bucket list this year.

So, where are the best spots to catch a stunning view of the Aurora Borealis as it lights up the sky? Alaska’s Far North region and Northern Canada offer prime aurora-viewing real estate, while overseas, aurora-seekers flock to Scandinavia or Iceland.

Hopefully you can catch these stunning auroras before the viewing season ends, but if not, you can still enjoy nature’s light show with this photo tour of the Northern Lights.
