Traces of Ireland’s rich royal history can still be found throughout the country in the towering stone castles that dot the countryside. No matter what part of Ireland you plan to visit, a castle will be within reach, offering a chance to explore the country’s history firsthand.

One of the most magnificent and recognizable castles on the Emerald Isle is Kilkenny Castle, a 12th-century fortress that sits on the River Nore. Inside, the restored 19th-century-era bedrooms, library and art gallery transport visitors back to the castle’s heyday. Outside, the surrounding gardens and walking paths make you feel like royalty as you enjoy the landscaped greenery and views of the river.

Other castles, such as the grand Ashford Castle in Mayo, offer a stay that’s fit for a king. In fact, Ashford Castle is now considered one of the top resorts in Europe, offering royal amenities like archery, horseback riding, golf, fishing and shooting.

Today, you can take a look at how Ireland’s royals once lived with this photo tour of Ireland’s castles.
