It took world leaders, sports stars and celebrities to pitch for their home cities, but one city won out: Rio de Janeiro

It’s official: Olympians from around the world will converge in Rio in 2016 for the summer Olympic Games.

In the voting process, Chicago was the first to be eliminated, followed by Tokyo. The Olympic Committee ended the conference after Chicago and Tokyo were eliminated and at 1pm EST, it was announced the Rio will host the 2016 Olympics.

The past few months have brought representatives from Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Madrid to Copenhagen, where the International Olympic Committee heard pitches from city representatives who want the Olympics in 2016.

But in the end, the city that brought us the Copacabana and caipirinha’s won the coveted Olympic nod.
