Security lines at Oakland International Airport look set to get shorter after the introduction of express lanes was approved.

The Oakland Board of Port Commissioners voted in favour of adding new lanes for passengers registered on the Clear program.

Rosemary Barnes, Spokesperson at the airport, said demand for an express security lane had been high from frequent flyers and business travelers. She told the San Francisco Chronicle: “Our customer surveys and feedback showed that our customers very much wanted an express lane to be offered here.”

Passengers will be able to register for Clear at kiosks located in the airport or online. Annual membership costs $100 and a one-off fee of $28 is charged on application to cover the costs of security and background checks.

Steve Brill, Chief Executive of Clear, said that 20,000 travelers are already signed up to the program, a figure he expects to rise with the addition of Oakland due to the popularity of the airport with business passengers.
