Looking for fresh, East Coast seafood? New York has a number of top fish markets that are destinations for home cooks and restaurant chefs alike. Read on for four of the city’s best.

New Fulton Fish Market

Fulton Fish Market has a long history: Founded in 1822, the market moved to its current location in the south Bronx in 2005. The world’s second largest fish market, New Fulton is open on weekdays from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. and handles millions of pounds of seafood every day.

Acme Smoked Fish

Specializing in smoked instead of fresh-caught fish, Acme sells a selection of top-rated lox, cured whitefish and other specialties. The processing facility, located in Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, opens for retail shopping on Friday mornings only – get in early to get slabs of melt-in-your-mouth tender smoked salmon.

Sea Breeze Fish Market

Located in the Hells Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, Sea Breeze Fish Market is one of the city’s oldest seafood retail operations. Selling dozens of products, ranging from wild-caught mussels to tilapia and crabs to mahi mahi, this market is a standout.

Union Square Farmers’ Market

The city’s largest farmers’ market, the Union Square market runs four days a week. You can pick up everything from freshly baked bread and home-brewed cider to ostrich eggs and seasonal produce. Sellers like Blue Moon Fish supply fresh-caught, local fish and shellfish.
