A few years ago, the focus at Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) was Northwest Airlines’ dazzling McNamara Terminal, a facility that changed the way people thought about changing planes in the Motor City. Now it’s some other airlines’ turn, as they get new digs.

DTW’s new North Terminal is set to open on September 17. The facility will be home to a slew of carriers: Air Canada, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines; discount airlines AirTran Airways, Southwest, Spirit, and USA 3000; United Airlines, and US Airways.

Northwest remains in the McNamara as (for now at least) to present SkyTeam partners Aeromexico, Air France, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The probable merger between Northwest and Delta, and Continental’s planned departure from SkyTeam, could change terminal line-ups as partners pair off again.

When the North Terminal is complete, Detroit will “decommission” its venerable Smith and Berry Terminals. Officials contend the new set-up will render DTW “one of the newest, most operationally capable and efficient airports in North America.” Detroit Metro handles some 36 million flyers per year.
