Happy National Dog Day! In honor of man’s best friend, here’s a look at some of the most dog-friendly vacation spots in the U.S.

San Diego, California

This sunny seaside city in Southern California loves its furry friends, and you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly beaches lining the shore. Dog Beach and Fiesta Island are two popular picks, thanks to their leash-free sands. If your pup would rather frolic on dry land, head to outdoor spaces like Balboa Park or Cowles Mountain. If your dog is the adventurous type, don’t miss San Diego’s annual Surf Dog Competition, where canines take to their boards to tackle San Diego’s famous waves.

Boston, Massachusetts

You’ll find plenty of dog-friendly outdoor spaces throughout this historical city, including the famous Freedom Trail. This 2.5-mile walk will take you and your pup to some of the most notable sites from the American Revolution, including the site of the Boston Massacre and Paul Revere’s home. Stop by Boston Commons to let your pooch off his leash for a bit in certain areas, or head out on the water on a dog-friendly harbor cruise.

Key West, Florida

The beaches of Key West are all about kicking back and relaxing island-style, and your dog is more than welcome to relax with you on these Florida shores. You can spend the day leash-free at one of Key West’s beachside dog parks, or you can rent kayaks or paddle boards for your pooch, if she’s more into aquatic adventures. Speaking of aquatic adventures, Key West even offers a dog-friendly dolphin-viewing tour.

Savannah, Georgia

This charming Southern city is all about hospitality, which includes welcoming furry friends with open arms. The lush squares and trails of Savannah make the perfect spots to walk with your dog, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the number of local restaurants that will be happy to pamper Fido with a water bowl and treat while you dine. While you’re in Savannah, don’t miss your chance to take your dog for a walk along the Riverfront.

Seattle, Washington

This caffeinated metropolis is home to more dogs than children, according to Seattle Magazine, and dozens of dog-friendly hotels and restaurants are ready to welcome you and Fido during your next getaway to the Emerald City. Take your pooch for a ferry ride to the San Juan Islands, or head up to Golden Gardens to let your pup roam leash-free while you soak up the views of the Puget Sound.
