Here’s a ground-bound amenity that helps to reinforce Oakland International’s (OAK) reputation as a haven for flyers in search of bargains.
The airport that’s already a hotbed of activity for discount airlines Southwest and JetBlue now serves up free Wi-Fi.
Among other airports in the land offering gratis wireless connectivity are Denver International (DEN); Portland, OR; Birmingham, AL (BHM); and cross-bay Mineta San Jose International (SJC).
In many instances — such as Oakland and Denver — Wi-Fi is advertiser-supported. A company called FreeFi (Web site: www.freefi.net) works with OAK and DEN. Lawrence Laffer, the firm’s director of sales and marketing, says “Air Travelers like Wi-Fi, but don’t like paying for it. Our sponsors take care of that.”
There should be ample product exposure at OAK. The airport offers 161 daily departures to 26 destinations.
