If you’re planning to visit Memphis, now’s the time to do it. The weather is cool, the crowds manageable and – if you know where and when to look – the fun is free. The Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau has some suggestions that will stretch your dollar, and deepen your dive into this one-of-a-kind city.
– Check out A. Schwab’s Dry Goods Store. It’s been in business since 1876, and is the oldest remaining original business on Beale Street. It’s filled with voodoo powders and a variety of stuff you’re not going to get anyplace else.
– Stroll down the Beale Street Walk of Fame and see the musical notes engraved in the sidewalk. They mark the place some of this river city’s best and brightest musicians are honored.
– Immerse yourself in all things Southern at the Center for Southern Folklore. It reflects the art, music culture and inclinations of the South. From time to time there are weekend concerts here.
– Meander about the Cooper-Young Antiques District, a bargain-hunter’s paradise. You don’t have to buy anything. Looking’s just fine. Drink in the nostalgia, work up an appetite, head to any one of a host of nearby restaurants and – over a nice glass of wine – decide that artifact you saw back in the store really is must-have.
– Go find some ghosts. Be part of a real, live hunt by hooking up with Memphis Paranormal Investigations. You’ve got to be 21 years or older, but it’s free. Organizers say this is the real deal. Space is limited.
– The Memphis Zoo is a gem, and on Tuesday afternoons from two till closing, admission is free – for Tennessee residents.
