All that dust that has been flying at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) has a purpose: a new 26-gate terminal.

Now comes word that workers have just topped off the North Terminal, putting in place the final steel beam. Expect he $426-million affair to open next year, replacing the aging L.C. Smith and Berry Terminals. Combined with Detroit’s relatively new McNamara Terminal, home for Northwest Airlines, what was once one of the oldest complex of airline terminals in the country will soon be perhaps the newest.

The new North Terminal will handle a lot of O&D traffic – passengers originating their trips in Detroit, or whose final destination is the Motor City. Look for the following carriers to use the new place: Air Canada, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, United Airlines, and US Airways.

Discount airlines include Spirit, Southwest, AirTran, and USA 3000.

If you’re passing through Detroit’s Smith Terminal, look for a model of the new North Terminal. The airport plans to put one up there.
