Every time you fly, you wonder: Do you pack the liquids you need, and check your luggage, or do you agonize over the 3.4 ounce rule, and use a carry-on? For travelers who wish to bring their normal-sized bottles of shampoos, lotions, and things along with them without checking a bag, there is hope. The question now is: How much are you willing to bare?
A newly developed machine that has been tested in 19 airports all over the nation can detect explosive materials in liquids from safe materials, like cosmetics. The only catch is that the machine also detects an image of your naked body.
The Transportation Security Administration would eventually like to rid airports of the antiquated metal detectors and replace them with the intelligent new machines. “Assuming tests continue to be positive, the machines will eventually be used at most domestic airports,” says Joe Sharkey of the New York Times.
Although some travelers may shiver at the thought of airport security staff seeing them in such a vulnerable state, faces and private body parts are distorted on the screen, and images are not stored or saved. And while the machines take a few more seconds than the customary metal detectors, no significant delays have been reported throughout testing, so drawbacks dwindle down to personal pride and privacy.
So, how much would you bare?
