Headed to Thailand’s capital city? Don’t let worries of blowing your travel budget get you down – there are plenty of wallet-friendly ways to enjoy the city. Here are seven ways to do Bangkok on the cheap.

Lumphini Park

Escape the crowds and congestion of the city and surround yourself with the lush gardens and soothing sounds of Lumphini Park. Once a royal paradise, this park is now one of the most pristine public green spaces in the city. Soak up the atmosphere of this outdoor wonder by hitting the walking trails, scoping out a grassy area for a picnic or by taking a paddle boat out on one of the park’s lakes.

Street food

There’s no beating the culinary bargains you’ll find on the streets of Bangkok, so go ahead: Feast like a king without breaking the bank. Pan-fried noodles, meaty skewers and even deep-fried bugs for less than a few dollars are just a few of the culinary treats awaiting you.

Khao San Road

Bangkok has an infamous party scene, and luckily you don’t need to be a big spender to indulge. Cheap drinks are available all along this party-centric road, where you’ll always find free entertainment in the form of live music, friendly travelers and cheeky locals.

The Golden Mount

For the best views of the city, make the trek up the roughly 300 steps of The Golden Mount, a temple in the heart of Bangkok. Climbing the mountain is free, as are the panoramic views you’ll be treated to.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

This massive outdoor market is the largest in Thailand, and you could easily spend an entire weekend wandering the stalls and aisles of Chatuchak. Window-shopping is free, and you can also pick up knickknacks like silk scarves, clothing and jewelry for some of the cheapest prices in the city.

Bangkok Butterfly Garden & Insectarium

Speaking of the Chatuchak Weekend Market, you’ll want to make sure to pop into the Bangkok Butterfly Garden & Insectarium next door. Entry is free, and you’ll see hundreds of butterflies and other insects flutter around the ferns, flowers and greenery that make up this gorgeous enclosed atrium.

Museums

Another great way to explore Bangkok for free is through the handful of local museums offering free admission. Your budget-friendly options include the Royal Elephant Museum, the Bangkokian Museum and the Corrections Museum.
