There’s perhaps no better place to take that first balloon journey than Albuquerque, the self-proclaimed Ballooning Capital of the World.

Home to the 41st Annual Balloon Fiesta coming up Oct. 6 – 14, you can jet a jump on things by traveling there a shade before or after legions of folks descend on the city.

Start your journey at the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum. The place gives you an intimate insight into the science of lighter-than-air flight, one that helps you appreciate how beautiful – and challenging – the pursuit can be.

After that ground-bound primer, it’s time for the real deal. There are a number of safe, reliable ballooning companies in and about Albuquerque. Here are three of them:

  • Private Balloon Flights is a small, boutique company. Instead of large eight- to 12-passenger balloons, these are far smaller affairs. Some of their craft are capable of holding just two folks – and the pilot. Their other lighter-than-air conveyances accommodate three to five passengers.
  • Rainbow Ryders, Inc.® – Hot Air Balloon Company has been around for 28 years under the same ownership. The standard package includes an hour’s flight, traditional champagne landing ceremony, a certificate and a balloon pin.
  • Above and Beyond Affordable Balloon Rides specializes in rides for larger groups – conventions, reunions and such. The firm has been in business for some 27 years now.
