U.S. airlines reported a drop in on-time performance year-over-year, the Department of Transportation said Tuesday.

The airline on-time performance reports said airlines had a combined on-time arrival rate of 76.1 percent, citing airport congestion, equipment problems and weather as the main factors for delays.

According to the DOT, Hawaiian Airlines came in with the best on-time performance in June 2009. Continental Airlines reported the fewest delays. American Airlines and Comair posted the worst on-time performance numbers.

Airlines report on-time data and cite causes of delays and cancellations for nonstop flights to the DOT on a monthly basis. A flight is considered on-time if it arrives within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time as shown in the airlines’ reservations systems. Canceled flights and flights diverted to other cities are considered ‘late’ by reporting standards.
