If you remember the tale of the “Three Billy Goats Gruff,” you’ll recall the billy goats trying to cross a bridge, only to come across a fearsome troll that lives under the bridge. While this is just a folk tale, you can actually find a troll dwelling under a bridge in the Seattle neighborhood of Fremont.
Under the George Washington Memorial Bridge, an 18-foot concrete troll makes his home. His hand clutches a real Volkswagen Beetle, as if the troll had risen up and snatched the car right off the bridge. Often, the troll will be decorated with chalk or costumes throughout the year.
The troll was commissioned in 1989 by the Fremont Arts Council, and yes, it was inspired by the tale of the “Three Billy Goats Gruff.” Today, the troll hosts events throughout the year, the most notable of which are Troll-a-Ween on Oct. 31 and Shakespeare at the Troll during the summer months.
