Williams Gateway Airport in Mesa, Arizona, is to be renamed the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport next month.
The Williams Gateway Airport authority (WGAA) voted in favor of the change, with a new logo to be revealed on October 15 when the new name comes into effect.
Lynn Kusy, Executive Director of WGAA, said that the new name will help the airport to reinforce its position as an alternative to Phoenix Sky Harbor. “Changing the name is crucial to ensure the airport reaches its highest potential in creating jobs and commercial service development,” she explained.
The move follows a consultation with staff and passengers on changing the name of the airport.
Allegiant Air will be the first airline to use the airport as a hub from November 16, when it will begin operating flights to 13 destinations, an initiative which the Arizona Republic reports required the airport to include Phoenix in its name.
