When you’re inside a carefully designed metal tube hurtling through the air at 35,000 feet, your culinary options are somewhat limited. (The yummy featured image is by ume-y.)

Avoid finding yourself at the mercy of hunger, or worse, an airline’s questionable cuisine – stow away one or two of these healthy airplane-friendly snacks.

NB: Be sure to check local security restrictions for carry-on items

 

 

Water

Dehydration can cause or exacerbate hunger, jet lag and fatigue. Almost every airport in the world has handily-sized bottles for sale airside (that’s beyond security).

 

 

Energy bars

Although they tend to be high in calories and fat, they are generally better than a slice of pizza or a chocolate bar / bag of sweets at the airport.

 

 

Single-portion cereal cups

Most legacy airlines offer free coffee and tea. Ask politely, and an in-flight attendant will probably sneak you some milk and a spoon.

 

 

Yogurt

Yogurt is a great portable snack. Many airside shops stock it. Your airline should be able to supply you with a spoon if one isn’t provided with the pot.

 

 

Nuts

They’re an airline favourite for a reason. A good source of protein, small portions will quickly fend off hunger in small portions.

 

 

Fruit

Apples and oranges are best because they can withstand some rough treatment.

 

 

Beef jerky

Ideal for people monitoring their carb intake. Though watch out for the high salt content.

 

 

Dried fruits

Their portability offsets their high calorie (and sugar) count.
