This weekend brings a celebration of red flannel shirts, no-nonsense working boots and calloused hands. That’s right, it’s time for the Official Paul Bunyan Show, running Oct. 5-7 in Cambridge, Ohio.
The first thing organizers want you to know is that the Paul Bunyan Show is the site of a quartet of contests: the Ohio State Lumberjack Championships, the International Lumberjack Competition, the Log Loader Competition and (this is a long one) the Game of Logging Professional and Landowner National Competitions.
Some folks consider chainsaw carving an art. In the hands of pros, it can be just that. The weekend should have plenty of folks demonstrating the craft. If you ever saw log burling on TV, where lumberjacks tray to keep their balance on a maliciously rotating log, you can see the real thing this coming weekend. The sport is not for the slow of foot.
Heavy equipment types will find a home here too. There will be ample demonstrations of the metal monsters. The Official Paul Bunyan Show is part industrial demonstration, part festival. Lumberjacks tend to work up an appetite with all the burling about, log loading and such, so it’s no surprise there will be plenty of food on hand. As for all the chainsaws and hand cutting, some of one-time trees morph beautifully into woodcrafts.
Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Cambridge is some 80 miles east of Columbus.
