We’ve all heard that the economy is getting better, but that can mean something different for every industry. For travelers, it means that the airline industry may come back more slowly than other businesses.

Predictions made by Boyd Group International say that what we’ve been seeing in travel trends during the recession may even take a few years to recover. The reports foresee a continuous decline in US air traffic, and that pre-recession levels aren’t coming back in the near future.

Here are a few of the group’s predictions for US flights in the next few years:

  • Some domestic airlines may retire jets in order to save on costs and fill existing planes to the maximum, flying fewer vacant seats.
  • Approximately 16 million fewer plane trips will occur in 2014 than in 2008.
  • A large chunk of US air traffic will come from international visitors, since most travelers from other countries visit more than one city after they’ve entered the US.

What can you do? Find the cheapest flights you can, and keep traveling.
