All were in agreement when the Americus City Council and Sumter County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to change the name of a Georgia airport. Approaching its centennial, the Souther Field Airport in Americus, Georgia, is now known as the Jimmy Carter Regional Airport.

Even though those voting were in favor of the switch, a citizens group opposed the idea, stating that while they respect the tribute to the 39th president, they’d rather keep the airport’s historic legacy intact. A private company called Souther Field Aviation runs the airport.

The small hub, just 15 miles away from Jimmy Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, was originally named after Henry Souther, one of the significant developers of the airfield. Charles Lindbergh takes a piece of this airport’s history as well, since this is the first place he ever flew solo.

Now, if you travel to Georgia, be sure to stop by Americus’ newly named airport and pay a little tribute to revered US president.
