Once you arrive, you’ll be greeted by grand Victorian homes and horse-drawn carriages — this is an isle unspoiled by over development. Rent a bicycle and explore Mackinac Island’s 70 miles of trails or take a horse-drawn carriage tour of sights like Fort Mackinac.

Michigan springs to life throughout the summer months with festivals all season long. Fittingly, the birthplace of America’s auto industry hosts a high-octane weekend to kick off the summer during the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix. Other notable summer events include the National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Film Fest, founded by filmmaker Michael Moore.

Once Michigan’s lakes defrost from winter, you can dig your toes into the sand along the state’s 3,126 miles of freshwater shoreline. Must-visit beach towns include the charmingly small Holland, historic Grand Haven and the sand dune-surrounded village of Silver Lake.
The land overflows with waterfalls.
With more than 200 waterfalls across the state, you don’t have to look far to explore Michigan’s beautiful rushing waters. You’ll hear their low roars long before you see them, but follow their siren’s song for some of the state’s most tranquil sights.
The state is made for summer camping getaways.
Michigan’s campgrounds put the state’s natural beauty on full display come summertime. Take in the sweeping views of Lake Michigan from the lighthouse of Ludington State Park before camping under the stars, or set up shop among the pines of Wilderness State Park with a view of the lake.
