Kids got those little town blues? Here’s a sure cure: take ‘em to New York City. There’s a myth out there that the Big Apple isn’t kid-friendly. It’s just that, a myth.
Consider how you and your kids can take Manhattan (and a few other boroughs too):
- Explore the Children’s Museum of the Arts. Less than a year ago CMA opened a new space in SoHo. It’s dedicated to hands-on creativity.
- Take the ferry over to Staten Island (an adventure in of itself) and head to the Staten Island Children’s Museum. Here they can get an up-close look at the life of a bug, see replicas of diverse ecosystems and outfit themselves as actors in Portia’s Playhouse.
- More museums, this one perhaps the mightiest of them all. It’s the American Museum of Natural History and it’s where you’ll find the fabled dinosaur wing. If you want to open your child’s eyes to the world around them there are worse places to start than this.
- Get out of doors and take in the Central Park Zoo. Lions, and tigers and bears, oh my. They’re all here – as is the quintessentially kid-friendly Tisch Children’s Zoo where wee ones can pet the animals. Central Park Zoo is a pioneer in the recreation of natural habitats within an urban setting, a perfect segue to a visit to the American Museum of Natural History.
- Finish off the trip with a trek across the Brooklyn Bridge. When you get off, amble along the waterfront and keep an eye out for the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. It’s located at 1 Water St. (at Old Fulton St.) This local favorite features natural, homemade ice cream – but the view of the Manhattan skyline is the real treat.
