Nine months after the destructive forces of Hurricane Sandy ripped through New Jersey’s iconic coast, the Jersey Shore is welcoming summer tourists back with open arms. This summer, there’s plenty to do on the beaches and boardwalks of the Jersey Shore, so what are you waiting for? Here’s why you should visit the Jersey Shore this summer.
The boardwalks
Is there anything that screams classic summer escape louder than the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore? From midway games and prizes to carnival rides, fried foods, funnel cakes and saltwater taffy, the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore are ready to give you that quintessential summer experience. There’s Seaside Heights, where you can party at the bars or even get a body piercing, or you can unwind at the family-friendly Ocean City boardwalk, an alcohol-free area that instead offers up fudge, taffy and the so-called best fry you’ll ever try. Other great boardwalks include the ride-packed Wildwood and the iconic Atlantic City boardwalk.
Excitement in Atlantic City
The East Coast’s famous gambling city offers up plenty to enjoy, regardless of whether or not you choose to hit the table games. Eight new restaurants have recently popped up in Atlantic City, offering everything from authentic Philly cheesesteaks (Tony Luke’s) to craft beers and hand-selected wines (Atlantic City Bottle Company). This weekend, the four-day Atlantic City Food and Wine Festival (July 25-28) offers a tasting village, a “Blues, Brews and BBQ” event and a beach soirée with craft cocktails and gourmet hors d’oeuvres. And in August, there will be “thunder over the boardwalk” during the annual Atlantic City Airshow, which hosts a full day of fly-bys, demonstrations and aerobatics.
Free movies on the beach
As the sun sets on Jersey, you can pull up a lawn chair and crack open the cooler as you settle in to catch a free movie on the beach, thanks to Shore Flicks. Family-friendly films like “Brave” and “Madagascar 3” and cult classics like “Psycho” and “Jaws” are just a few of the movies that will be screened at 18 different locations along the Jersey Shore this summer.
