Peak Season: Summer in Pathos is a beach bum’s dream. Cloudless skies, yellow sun, hot sand, and cool water are the four ingredients you’ll need to when you book your flight to Paphos in the months of June, July, or August.
Off-peak Season: Even in the winter, this is the place to be. Although summer is a beach hopper’s paradise, take advantage of the milder temperatures to do other outdoor activities, and even ski in the Trodos Mountains if the slopes are calling. The months between November and March usually have eight or nine rainy days a month.
Buses are the cheapest and most comprehensive way to get around in urban Paphos. You can always hail or call a taxi, which is still fairly cheap, but shared taxis are even cheaper. Four to seven people share one of these minibuses, making for a cheap, comfortable ride between towns like Larnaca, Paphos, Nicosia and Limassol. Remember that traffic travels on the left side of the road here, so be careful when you’re driving or crossing the street. While main roads are well-maintained, side roads are often narrow, winding and unpaved. The UN buffer zone is blocked off for a reason, namely the presence of landmines and military activity. For your own safety, never enter the zone unless at a designated crossing point.
Paphos Aphrodite Festival: This celebration is one for the books. If you find a cheap flight to Paphos in August, you’ll be privy to one of the biggest native events of the year. The Paphos Aphrodite Festival is held in the square directly in front of the medieval castle, referred to as Castle Square. Each year, the island invites a notable opera group to perform a classic for everyone to enjoy past performances include Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’ and ‘Aida’, Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ and Puccini’s ‘Turandot’. Just follow signs for the harbor and you’ll be on your way.
Paphos Castle: When visiting such a beautiful location, it’s always important to absorb the place’s history. Your flight to Paphos is a great opportunity to read a bit about the island’s past. Located in Kato, just next to the square lies an enormous structure called the Paphos Castle. Built to protect the harbor, the former Byzantine fort was built in the 13th century, and then rebuilt by the Lusignans. In 1570, it was destroyed by Ottoman attacks, and the only part of the building that remains utterly untouched is the bell tower.
Secret Valley Golf Course: Golfing is a great alternative to the beach, especially for those who book flights to Paphos in the winter. Since it won’t be too hot, spending your day on this 18-hole championship course will certainly be an intense experience. In the valley of east Paphos, this par 71 course has two opportunities for birdies, and is known for its extra challenging second half. Make plans for individual lessons if you’re a beginner, because resident PGA pros are in charge of teaching them.
Coral Bay: Whether you’re a veteran or a novice, diving is one event not to be missed on the island. Take a quick lesson in diving school to participate in one of the daily dives in St. George’s Harbor and Amphora. With both boat dives and shore dives, this underwater bliss is surely something to add to your Paphos travel. All ages and abilities are welcome to dive, but if the underwater world isn’t for you, Coral Bay is located on a main road with other shops, restaurants, and bars to kill the time.
