Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) serves Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. It is located very near Yerevan, less than 10 miles from the city center. Known for some of the most beautiful architecture on the planet – a mix of brutalist, modernist and medieval – Yerevan is absolutely worth visiting, especially with a history tour.
As it is the biggest airport in Armenia, EVN is your gateway to the capital and surrounding regions. This expert guide provides the best insider tips to Zvartnots International Airport to make your journey smoother.
There are multiple ways to get to and from the airport in Yerevan. It is a small city so things are rather close – even with traffic it will only take a few minutes between the city center and the airport. There are taxis available right outside the arrival zone of the airport terminal as you exit the baggage claim area.
You can use an app to book a taxi – gg, Utaxi and Yandex are available for this – or you can just flag one down anywhere outside.
Locals use a mini bus (called a “marshrutka”) and it's so inexpensive that it’s basically free. It’s a shared service, though, so you have to figure out where it’s going and this may be difficult if you’re not familiar with the area or the language. There is also a bus service that runs from Zvartnots airport to France Square every 30 minutes and the journey is only 20 minutes – it’s the number 100 bus.
If you plan to visit places outside of the capital, the airport has a few car rental agencies located right inside the arrivals hall, including popular international brands like Hertz and Avis. Parking is right in front of the terminal in a covered parking building and easy to find – just follow the signs.
Keep in mind that parking in the city is harder as it gets quite congested, so I recommend just getting a taxi if you’ll be staying in the capital. They are not expensive and are so convenient in Yerevan, plus they eliminate all the stress of parking and driving in a new place.
There is just 1 terminal building at EVN and it handles both domestic and international flights. Armenia’s capital city airport is little, but it has the basics that you might need, including free Wi-Fi. If you need an ATM machine, there is one in both the arrivals hall and the departures hall.
Currency exchange from Unibank, Converse Bank and Ardshinbak is also available at both the check-in area and in the arrivals hall. These are open 24 hours per day.
If you want to purchase a fast track for expediting airport procedures, this is available to any paying customer at Zvartnots. You can purchase this premium service on the airport website and this will allow you to avoid standing in very long lines.
Alfa-Pharm in the departures hall has all your pharmacy needs and is even open 24 hours per day. Baggage storage is available on the first floor at the arrivals hall and it’s really inexpensive to leave a bag here – just provide your passport and you can leave items behind to travel around more freely until you return.
There are 2 business lounges at EVN and I have enjoyed spending time in both of them. They are both perfectly good and you can access them for free if you’re flying business class, or you can simply pay to get in any time.
I recommend reserving a space and paying in advance to ensure you get in, and you can do this directly on the airport website or even by email. The lounges offer food and drinks plus all the business services you might need.
For complete white glove service, you can book the VIP Lounge experience. This offers its own check in counter, as well as separate security and passport control and customs screenings. It even comes with its own luggage transport service – and speaking of transport, they will drive you in a Mercedes to your boarding gate where you just walk up a little staircase to get on your flight.
If you plan to do shopping, know that the selection is a little limited here. You will have a classic duty-free area after security, though, selling all the usual perfumes, cosmetics, liquor and more. Aeroshop, which is in the arrivals hall on the first floor and open 24 hours per day, is the spot to buy water, snacks, balloons and other small gifts.
A local tradition is to buy flowers for whomever is hosting you in Armenia, so there is a fresh cut flower shop as you arrive in the arrivals hall. If you want a local sweet or candy to buy as a gift to take home, try Sweet Shop located at the departure gates.
The Travel Shop on the second floor of the departures hall is open 24 hours per day, and this is where to get plugs, pillows or other things that you might want for your trip.
UCom and VivaCell both sell local sim cards if you want local access to cell service, and both are located in the arrivals hall. For some reason my international cell never works in Armenia so this has worked out perfectly for my trips.
There are not a lot of options for food and drinks at this airport, but there are still a few places worth trying out. First, I loved the Esperanto Cafe in the arrivals hall as it has Italian, Chinese and Armenian cuisine – I love their Lahmajun (basically Armenian pizza).
There are a few coffee shops dotted around the airport. Coffee House is where the locals hang out (a great place to meet people) and it’s close to the parking lot in the arrivals area. There is also Coffee Cup Lavazza in the departures hall for a coffee and a sweet pastry. Segafredo has coffee available airside – it’s nothing special, but when you need caffeine on this side of the airport, this will do.
If you’re at the gates you can go to Square One for an easy meal. It’s just a chain restaurant with burgers and pastas, but this is also where to try the famous Armenian cognac made from Ararat Valley grapes.
Armenia is not yet a major tourist destination so there are simply not very many flights in and out of Yerevan (including no direct flights from the US). It’s worth going – trust me – but it does mean you may need to be a little flexible if there are delays or cancelations to your flight. It’s not as simple as hopping on a later flight that day, and you can easily get stuck overnight.
In this case, you may be glad to know there is an airport hotel called the ZenYerevan, but keep in mind it is a capsule hotel. It is in the arrivals zone and it’s a cozy space where you can pay per day or per hour. I personally have loved capsule hotels in Japan, but this is not for you if you have a tendency to feel claustrophobic at all.
Either way, I recommend hopping a cab to the city and staying there instead, especially for an overnight. It’s so close and easy to reach. For the best experience, you can stay at The Alexander, which is my favorite hotel in Yerevan.
The Alexander has a great gym, a perfect spa and fabulous dining, so it’s definitely worth the slight extra effort to get there. They have incredible fresh cheeses and cook with so many fresh herbs – it’s one of my favorite places in the world to eat and I would travel back to Armenia just to eat here again and again.

My earphone set did not work throughout the flight. I tried with two different sets. I believe there was a problem with the system where I was seated.
