Panama City Tocumen Intl Airport Guide

Taryn White
October 28, 2024

Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama is located about 15 miles northeast of Panama City. It’s the largest airport in the country and one of the most significant in Central and South America. Known as "The Hub of the Americas," it serves as a regional gateway, seamlessly connecting Latin America, the US, Canada and the Caribbean.

The airport is a critical hub for Panama’s national airline, Copa Airlines, and facilitates more than 17 million passengers annually. The strategic location and comprehensive connectivity of PTY make it a convenient entry point for travelers embarking on adventures throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America.

As a Washington DC-based traveler, Copa Airlines' nonstop flight from Washington-Dulles to Tocumen Airport is an excellent route to travel when I visit Latin America. This guide provides essential information about Tocumen International Airport, ensuring you have a smooth and informed experience when navigating through this key hub.

Airport overview

This modern airport has state-of-the-art facilities and is one of the few airports in Latin America that can accommodate the Airbus A380-800. Originally constructed just after World War II to protect the economically vital Panama Canal, Tocumen initially served as a US military base.

The airport comprises 2 terminals. Terminal 1, the primary terminal, accommodates more than a dozen airlines. Terminal 2, the more recent addition, offers services from Air France, Copa Airlines, KLM and United Airlines. Both terminals feature an array of amenities, including restaurants, duty-free shops, bookstores and VIP lounges.

While a modern airport, I’ve found navigating this airport to be a less pleasant experience than other large airports, given the lack of moving walkways, few restrooms and the addition of secondary screenings.

Getting to and from Tocumen International Airport

Tocumen International Airport is conveniently located just a half-hour drive from downtown Panama City. Authorized taxi services, such as Cooperativa de Transporte Taxi Expreso Tocumen R.L., are readily available to transport you to any part of the country.

You can find the taxis immediately after baggage claim at taxi stands outside the terminal. Typically, a ride into the city costs no more than what you'd pay in most US cities, depending on your hotel's location, but fares may be higher at night or on Sundays. The taxis don’t use a meter, so you’ll need to negotiate and confirm the rate with the driver before departing the airport.

Panama City public transportation includes a modern metro system. A new branch of Line 2 opened in 2023, connecting the airport to the city center. At the airport, you can catch the train and head 2 stops to Corredor Sur, from where you can easily connect to other parts of the city using the wider metro system.

You can pay by debit card, credit card or digital wallet, so most travelers won’t need to purchase a separate metro card. However, be mindful that metro trains can get crowded and can be difficult to use if you have a lot of luggage.

Another public transportation option is the Metro Bus. To use the Metro Bus, you must purchase a prepaid Metro card before leaving the airport. Alternatively, The Panama Tourism Authority offers complimentary round-trip bus transportation from the airport to the Metromall Shopping Center, approximately 15 minutes away, with service kiosks available inside the airport.

For those who prefer the flexibility of driving, car rentals are another option. Tocumen International Airport has around a dozen car rental companies – including familiar brands like Hertz, Avis and Enterprise – located in Terminal 1 on the ground level. Driving in Panama is relatively straightforward, but I advise you to drive slowly and defensively.

Tourists with a valid international driver’s license are permitted to drive in Panama for up to 90 days. After this period, a Panamanian driving license is required.

Of all of the available options, I consider Uber to be the best, unless minimizing transportation costs is your top priority. Uber is typically the fastest transport option from the airport and generally less expensive than a taxi. It operates extensively in Panama City, though it is certainly more expensive than public transportation.

Security lines at Tocumen International Airport

The Tocumen International Airport customs authority utilizes a digitized form that allows arriving travelers to fill out forms on personal devices instead of on paper. Passengers arriving from non-validated countries must also undergo the One-Stop Security system, which requires a secondary screening for passengers arriving from airports that don’t meet Panama’s security standards.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, and you may be required to show a return ticket as well as prove adequate funds for your stay. A visa is not required for travelers from the US and Canada as long as your stay is less than 90 days. Travelers of other nationalities should check the Panama entry requirements on the Panama Tourism Authority website.

Passengers boarding US-bound flights from Tocumen International Airport must pass through 2 security and passport control procedures, with the second occurring right at the gate just before boarding. As part of this process, you will need to dispose of any liquids exceeding 3.4 ounces as well as any empty bottles.

I’ve flown to Tocumen with Panama as my destination, and I’ve connected at this airport en route to other Latin American destinations. In both cases, I’ve never had an issue with the standard security screenings and they haven’t taken longer than at other airports. However, I find the secondary security screening a huge inconvenience for which you need to allow extra time at the gate.

The screeners do a more thorough check of your carry-on luggage and will not allow you to take bottled water purchased at the airport on the plane. If you have a limited amount of time during your layover, especially if traveling to the US, you should proceed directly to your gate.

Tocumen International Airport dining options

Tocumen International Airport offers a diverse selection of more than 20 restaurants, bars and coffee shops throughout its 2 terminals. Among the fast-casual options, you'll find Wetzel's Pretzels, Bistro Market, Carl’s Jr. and Flying Dogs. For those craving sandwiches, Quiznos and Subway are easy choices.

Teriyaki Experience provides a healthier alternative to traditional fast food, serving noodles, soups, rice, salads and sushi, with hot dishes prepared on a teppanyaki griddle. Additionally, those with a penchant for Italian cuisine can choose from Olive Garden, Viena Pizza & Pasta and BIRRA Pizza Bar, with Olive Garden offering the most comprehensive menu of the 3.

Despite the wide array of culinary options, it's crucial to note that most of these establishments close by 10 pm. Therefore, if you're scheduled for a nighttime flight, it would be wise to bring some snacks to ensure you're not left hungry during your journey.

Airport lounges at PTY

Tocumen International Airport has 5 lounges, each providing various amenities like complimentary Wi-Fi, snacks and beverages for travelers. In Terminal 1 you'll find the Tocumen Royal Saloon, The Lounge Panama and a Copa Club. Terminal 2 houses another Copa Club as well as The Lounge.

Passengers flying in executive or business class on Copa Airlines or any Star Alliance member airline can access either of the Copa Club lounges. Additionally, all 5 lounges welcome members of Priority Pass and Diners Club.

Wi-Fi and other services at Tocumen International Airport

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available at the airport under the network name PTY_FREE_WIFI for up to 2 hours, although it can often be spotty. Additionally, the airport offers numerous shopping and duty-free stores with a range of luxury brands, fashion stores and souvenir shops.

The airport also offers a variety of other amenities including banks, ATMs, luggage wrapping services and even a pharmacy. If you find yourself in need of extra help, make your way to the tourist information desk situated in the Main Hall landside, just after leaving the restricted passenger zone.

Although I still enjoy flying Delta, the overall flying experience feels cheapened. But I guess that is true of most, if not all american carriers.
