The second largest city in Sweden, Gothenburg, has stepped out of Stockholm’s shadow to carve a niche as one of Scandinavia’s most popular tourist destinations. Gothenburg is a relaxed city with a welcoming atmosphere and reputation as a hub for innovation and creativity. On the city’s streets, decorative architecture mixes seamlessly with trendy cafes and restaurants where the local student population rubs shoulders with fashionistas and young professionals. Visitors can stroll past the old canals built by the Dutch in 17th century and feel the pulse of the city on the famous Avenyn shopping street. The glamorous street culminates dramatically at the impressive Poseidon fountain, infamous for scandalizing the locals when it was unveiled in the early thirties. Once the time has come to take a break from the buzz of the city you can visit Sweden’s largest theme park Liseberg. Drawing over three million visitors every year, the theme park features a number of blockbuster rides, including AtmosFear, one of Europe’s tallest free-fall attractions. If you want to experience some of local culture, make sure to visit the celebrated Konstmuseet, one of Gothenburg’s finest museums. This superb art collection includes works by such artistic heavyweights as Rubens, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Picasso, in addition to a selection of Scandinavian masters. The city lies at the mouth of the Gota River and is just a 30-minute tram journey from one of Scandinavia’s most stunning archipelagos.
With long sunny days and the appeal of midnight sun and host of musical and cultural events, summer is the peak season for visiting Gothenburg. Consequently, in the high season between June and the end of August you can expect to pay slightly higher prices in local hotels.
Winter season is most certainly the off season in the city, at this time of year the sun sets very early and even snow sports like skiing require artificial lighting. The shoulder season of spring (April to May) and autumn (September to mid-October) provides tourists with a cost effective alternative to the summer rush. In these months the weather is quite mild and there are number of local events to enjoy, including the annual carnival called Hammarkullekarnevalen, which is held in the month of May and is celebrated with dancing, singing and local processions.
Situated 13 miles (20 km) southeast of the city of Gothenburg, Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport (GOT) is Sweden’s second-largest airport, serving more than 4.3 million passengers per year.
With a spacious and relatively new terminal building, Gothenburg-Landvetter is an efficient airport. Smooth operations make checking-in and boarding a breeze, while quick baggage handling ensures that that your luggage is ready and waiting for you in the baggage claims area. There may not be an extensive range of shops and restaurants to choose from, however, several Internet stations located throughout the terminal offer a good alternative to help the time pass by.
Gothenburg-Landvetter Airport is small, clean, comfortable and user-friendly. Staff members are courteous and extremely helpful, and traveling from the airport to the city (and vice versa) is easy.
