When it comes to finding a classic American beachfront for a family-friendly getaway, the resort beach town of Virginia Beach in southeast Virginia always fits the bill. With 35 miles of sandy shores on the Atlantic Ocean, a 3-mile boardwalk and plenty of neighboring parks and wildlife refuges, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during a vacation in Virginia Beach.
Without a doubt, most flock to Virginia Beach to claim their own slice of sandy paradise on the shore. The beach certainly draws its crowds — but it’s worth holding your own to experience Virginia Beach for yourself. Sweeping ocean views (sometimes dotted with a dolphin or two), oceanfront parks, a fishing pier and plenty of boardwalk-style games and shops await.
But while lazing on the beach is certainly one of the biggest draws of the area, there is more to Virginia Beach than the sand. Historic lighthouses and the Old Coast Guard Station showcase the region’s past, while the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is one of the country’s most popular aquariums, thanks to its incredible indoor, outdoor and underwater exhibits.
While in town, visitors can also sneak a peek at Virginia’s top natural landscapes with visits to natural retreats like First Landing State Park, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. Active travelers will also find plenty to enjoy, from water sports and whale-watching to golfing and bird-watching. Of course, it’s perfectly acceptable to spend a vacation in Virginia Beach simply laying on the sand and soaking up the sun.
Peak travel months for Virginia Beach include June, July and August. During these months, the sun is shining and temperatures are at their highest, offering the best environment to enjoy the beaches and ocean. These months also bring the biggest crowds to Virginia Beach, so travelers should expect lots of company on the sand. The cold months of December, January and February can be the cheapest time of year to fly to Virginia Beach, but temperatures in the 100s make it difficult to enjoy the beach. Shoulder season months like April, May, September and October offer warm enough weather to enjoy the beaches without the crowds.
The easiest and most convenient way to get around Virginia Beach is by car, and rentals are available both at Norfolk International Airport and in the city, too. For travelers staying on the main beach area, a local trolley and public bus system offer limited transportation throughout the area. Those planning on traveling beyond the beach, though, should consider renting a car.
