Located in northern Ontario, Sudbury is a multi-cultural, welcoming city where lovers of outdoor sports, fine food and beautiful scenery will feel completely at home.
The city itself is appealing, but just outside the town, visitors can find wilderness retreats, hiking trails and fishing lakes aplenty. Bunker down at sites like Kukagami or clamber up to the stunning views of the A.Y. Jackson Scenic Look-out, and try your luck at Ramsey Lake – where bass, perch and pike will all be biting.
Sudbury is also a major cultural center. Listen to live folk music beneath the Northern Lights in July, catch the latest films at the city’s annual Cinefest and see the best in new Canadian playwriting talent at the town’s Theater Center, or catch a concert by the symphony orchestra. Few towns of Sudbury’s size can boast such riches.
And the town offers culinary delights as well. Because of its diverse population, the town is home to a huge variety of restaurants. Choose from Greek to Italian, Indian and Caribbean treats, before heading to the town’s many lively bars and clubs.
In the winter, Sudbury comes alive with seasonal activities. Skate on open air rinks or try ski slopes that snake through peaceful forest trails. The city also boasts the largest concentration of snowmobile trails in the world, and ice fishing is a local speciality.
Come summer, and there is even more on offer. Play golf, walk along the Trans-Canada Trail, rent a motor boat and head out water-skiing or swim at the many city lakes (all patrolled by trained lifeguards).
Sudbury is a unique place – forward looking, but with plenty of museums showing its long history of settlement; geared for outdoor leisure in winter and summer – and also a superb place to simply relax and have fun.
Winter or summer are both great times to visit. Head over between November and March to ski and skate in idyllic surroundings, or visit in June and July to enjoy outdoor swimming and the sublime spectacle of listening to music under the Northern Lights. An outdoor adventure in fall may be a great balance, with bargains to be had, so try September.
Buses are good, and tend to radiate from the terminal in the downtown area, so head there to get your bearings. Don’t forget to enquire about multi-day passes as well, as big savings are there to be had. Renting a car is another fine option, and will provide access to Toronto and the Ontario wilderness, which is not to be missed.
